Garmin's Latest Detects a vehicle nearly 2 Football Fields Away

Cycling on US streets can be a harrowing experience and if you’ve ever pedaled before sunrise or battled traffic mid-day, drivers can treat cyclists like road obstacles rather than humans. So one thing absolutely matters: Visibility.

That’s why Garmin’s latest update caught our attention and is something we absolutely cheer for because unlike a smartwatch, a bright-ass rear tail light and some advanced warning sounds like a great way to live another day.

Meet the Garmin Varia RearVue 820.

And according to the company, this is the brightest and most powerful radar tail light available. But if you dig into the details, it’s far more than just a simple upgrade from the existing Varia RTL515.

We’ve yet to get our hands-on the device but the 820 is more focused on smarter awareness and making sure you are SEEN and can SEE.

Brighter and Smarter Than Ever (But No Camera)

At its core, the RearVue 820 is a set of eyes in the back of your head — ones that watch your back when you need to look forward.

Starting with the radar detection, Garmin says, the 820 will start alerting you to objects that are a whopping 190 yards away. But where it gets really exciting is the radar. Before, you just saw small dots on your device and they got closer. But now, paired with a compatible Garmin Edge cycling computer or the Varia smartphone app, the wider range of view doesn’t just detect approaching vehicles — it categorizes them by size, tracks movement across lanes, and even assigns a threat level, offering a bit more context about what that vehicle is doing.

Also, the tail light is Garmin’s brightest yet, reportedly visible from up to 1.2 miles away (a full Ironman swim), and doubles as a brake light when you slow or stop which is a subtle but meaningful upgrade for communicating with vehicles or other group riders behind you.

Alerts can show up visually, audibly, or even as vibrations on compatible devices like Garmin watches — giving you options for how you want to stay informed without distracting from the ride itself.

More Battery Life, More Peace of Mind

In talking with some buddies months back, they all said they hadn’t pulled the trigger on Garmin’s tail lights because of the battery life. It wasn’t that good and for those long, long rides, they all worried it would crap out midway through and be kind of pointless.

But the RearVue 820 is claiming up to 24 hours of battery life in day flash mode and up to 30 hours in radar-only mode, making it way more viable as a long-haul companion than the older units that struggled to keep up.

We Want to Test This

We’ve always been fans of the Garmin Varia line because it truly can keep you alive every time you hit the road. The devices blend visibility with awareness while not being a pain in the ass to bring along.

The RearVue 820 is available today for $300.

What do you think? Are these improvements a whole new ball game or are you waiting to see if the Garmin gospel is real world truth.

Let us know in the comments. If we get our hands on the 820, what do you want to see?
