Freaks of Nature Launches the Freak Team, a Global Ambassador Program Uniting World-Class Athletes and Cultural Leaders

The Inaugural Freak Team includes endurance icon Rich Roll, professional surfer Bettylou Sakura Johnson, and ultrarunner Max Jolliffe

Freaks of Nature, the science-backed skin and suncare brand co-founded by legendary professional surfer Kelly Slater, today announced the launch of the Freak Team, a global ambassador program bringing together world-class athletes and culture-shaping leaders in a collaborative, long-term partnership.

Built on creativity and mutual alignment, the program is designed to go beyond traditional sponsorship. Each relationship is uniquely developed with the athlete to ensure authentic storytelling, shared values, and meaningful impact. Through a mix of content creation, events, product collaboration, and community engagement, Freak Team members play an active role in shaping the brand, both creatively and culturally, with opportunities for deeper partnerships including product innovation, storytelling, and support of each athlete’s personal initiatives.

The inaugural Freak Team roster spans endurance sport, surf, and trail running. Rich Roll, world-renowned ultra-endurance athlete, bestselling author, and host of The Rich Roll Podcast, brings a global platform rooted in plant-based living, mindfulness, and resilience, embodying a holistic view of performance that goes far beyond the finish line. “I’m a freak when it comes to what goes into and onto my body — it has to come from nature. Freaks of Nature delivers, and then some, with zero trade-offs on clean ingredients”, said Roll.

Bettylou Sakura Johnson, finished the 2025 WSL CT season ranked 5th in the world, is one of the most exciting surfers of her generation: raised on the North Shore of O’ahu, she brings fearless energy and a deep connection to the ocean, representing a new wave of athletes shaping surf culture with authenticity and confidence. “Being a freak means going for everything with your heart and no fear, that shows up in my career every single day. Freaks of Nature reflects the way I train and compete, and their commitment to peak performance is what makes me feel truly connected to this brand,” said Johnson.

Rounding out the roster, Max Jolliffe is an ultrarunner who found his calling by accident, transitioning from a Southern California surf and skate upbringing into one of endurance sport’s most compelling rising athletes, known for his breakout performance at the Moab 240 and a style that bridges trail running and outdoor culture. “I spend the majority of my life running, surfing, and enjoying time outside, so using clean and natural products is everything to me,” says Jolliffe. “Being a freak means pushing yourself to the extreme without fear, and having Kelly Slater in your corner while you do it doesn’t hurt either.”

The Freak Team announcement comes on the heels of the Body by Freaks campaign and the launches of the Solar Shield Spray and Jumbo Sun Stick with Max Jolliffe, a stretch that reflects exactly what Freaks of Nature is building toward: a brand where athletes, performance, and clean products are always at the center.

Freaks of Nature is a performance-driven skincare brand co-founded by legendary pro surfer Kelly Slater. Born from a lifetime spent pushing limits in the ocean and under the sun, our mission is to create the most effective, science-backed, and environmentally safe skin and suncare products on the market.

Freaks of Nature believes that peak performance and clean formulation aren’t a trade-off, they’re the standard. Every product is developed with athletes and skin microbiome PhDs, adventurers, and anyone who demands more from their skincare: superior protection, clinically proven results, and ingredients you can feel good about putting on your body and washing into the water.
