The brands OG daily trainer gets a tech focused face lift but should you care…
Gun to my head, if you asked me to pick a favorite running brand, I’d freeze up. My history with ASICS runs deep, but over the years, I’ve dived into HOKA and, of course, On—two brands that have blasted 🚀 to the top of the industry.
On, in particular, has skyrocketed. Just take a look at their financials: in 2023, the Swiss shoemaker pulled in $2.04 billion in net sales, a 55% increase from the previous year. And in 2024? Their stock jumped 53%. Not too shabby.
Now, they’re keeping the momentum going with their latest launch: the Cloudsurfer 2.

Let’s Rewind: From 2015 to 2025
The original Cloudsurfer kicked things off 15 years ago with a radically different design than today’s iteration. Engineered for runners aiming for a 6.5 to 8-minute mile pace, it introduced On’s CloudTec® shock-absorbing system and featured a 7mm heel-to-toe offset.
For years, the Cloudsurfer evolved gradually, like a fine wine, until 2023, when On made its biggest leap yet. That model introduced CloudTec® Phase, ditched the Speedboard® plate for a lighter, more sustainable build, and delivered a smoother, more cushioned ride.
And honestly? Great move, On. I was all for it.
Now, the Cloudsurfer 2 takes things even further. A computer-generated midsole and traction pattern boost durability and responsiveness, while the upper gets a breathability and fit upgrade for even more comfort on the run.

The Ultimate Ride Experience?
I haven’t logged a ton of miles in the Cloudsurfer 2 yet, but after a 12-mile run this past Sunday, I’ll say this—if you’re looking for one of the softest rides in On’s lineup, this shoe delivers.
When I asked what made the difference, I was told it’s all thanks to the evolved CloudTec® Phase system—designed to create an ultra-smooth rolling sensation that adapts to your stride, maximizing comfort without sacrificing performance.
And like I said before, without the Speedboard®, you get a more natural feel rather than that “spring-loaded” push forward. For me, that makes it ideal for daily training runs or recovery miles — especially when I’m jogging the 2 miles to pick up my kids from school.

So What’s New?
Everyone says it but when it comes to running shoes, it is all about the experience and here is why you might want to make the jump from the Cloudsurfer to the Cloudsurfer 2—something I’m testing myself.
A Fresh Design: As an OG Cloudsurfer owner, I always hated that script running across the top of the shoe. It screamed runner and was just kind of annoying. What I really want is a shoe that’s 75% performance, 25% casual—something I can wear out without getting roasted. Thankfully, On cleaned it up, but I’m still hoping for some more colorways!
Softer, Cushioned Foam: The evolved CloudTec® Phase technology delivers an even plusher ride with seamless heel-to-toe transitions.
Computer-Optimized Outsole: Designed for increased durability and stability, giving you a ride that lasts longer.
Redesigned Upper: The only thing worse than a hot bed at night…. HOT FEET. Improved breathability, a better fit, and a refined tongue should mean more comfort and better lockdown—whether you’re cruising through miles or just running errands.

Worthy of Your $160?
And that is the big question, right?
With the Cloudsurfer 2 officially announced today, I’m already putting it through its paces (literally) and will have a full review in the coming weeks.
From my early miles, I’m optimistic. With some smart upgrades and a serious commitment to comfort, this could be another standout daily trainer from On.
Stay tuned—I’ll drop my honest thoughts on launch day, February 25.
What about you? Are you an On fan, or prefer a different brand?
