Mount to Coast Drops the C1

The Upstart Brand Focuses on A Super Trainer Built for Long Miles

Mount to Coast may still be new to most runners. Having just launched in the U.S. in April 2024, the brand has been taking a different approach from the start.

While much of the industry focuses on speed and race-day performance, Mount to Coast is building for what happens after mile 20, 50, or beyond.

And that’s their thing and focus – the long distance GOATS.

And that’s where the C1 comes in.

Built for the Long Game

The C1 is a high-stack “super trainer” designed for distance and durability. It features a 42/36mm stack, 6mm drop, and a dual-layer midsole built for balance over bounce.

At the core is CircleCELL foam (more on that), paired with a more stable EVA base.

Instead of chasing maximum softness, the goal is consistency. Providing runners with cushioning that holds up without breaking down like their bodies do.

A Different Foam Story

Mount to Coast has built CircleCELL and it isn’t just about energy return, they position it around durability, claiming it lasts significantly longer than traditional PEBA foams, used by Nike, HOKA, Saucony, ASICS, while maintaining performance.

Also, its made from 100% renewable materials, adding a sustainability angle to a category that typically prioritizes speed over lifespan.

Is CircleCELL better? If it delivers, I’d think it is a meaningful shift, specially for high-mileage runners tired of shoes that lose their edge too quickly.

Designed for Distance

Everything else about the C1 supports that same idea, building for stability, lockdown, and breathability. The company via its announcement says:

  • The C1 has a wider base and sidewalls for stability
  • Has TUNEDFIT dual lacing for adjustable lockdown
  • A breathable upper built for long efforts

It’s nothing flashy but over a lot of miles when you’re just cranky enough, they’re details that matter, a lot.

Where It Fits

The C1 lands in the crowded “super trainer” category but given its positioning as a long-haul workhorse, more than a speed-focused hybrid; we can see it being a big win for the company.

The Takeaway

Mount to Coast isn’t trying to build the fastest shoe on the market, they’re building one thats still standing when the rest of you are lying on the ground and if the C1 lives up to that promise, it has a long future.
