Dang. Is it really that time of year already? The clocks fell back, the sun clocks out at 5 p.m., and the race calendar is finally quiet. You know what that means. It’s bulking season, the time of year when we all pretend a little extra winter weight is a strategy and head to the weight room with big plans and zero programming.
Apple just made that last part easier. Or they’re at least trying.
Fitness+ is getting a new feature called Gym Strength, a personalized strength planner that builds you a four-week plan around your goals, your experience, your schedule, and the equipment you have access to.
And it’s rolling out now in the iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, and watchOS 27.3 betas.
How ‘Gym Strength’ Works

You start by telling it what you want. Pick your workout days, pick the areas of the body you want to focus on, and choose how long you want to be there.
Say you go with five exercises per session, Apple estimates about 20 to 30 minutes. Go with seven and you’re looking at 45 to 60.
Behind the curtain, Gym Strength takes your inputs and builds your plan using expert-backed strength training protocols. Those plans combine Endurance, Hypertrophy, and Max Strength protocols based on your experience level, goals, schedule, and available equipment. Apple says the plans are not generated by Apple Intelligence.
From there, every workout spells out the exercises, the reps, the sets, and how much weight to lift. Each exercise comes with a short demo video from a Fitness+ trainer, and you can expand it to see the movement from three different angles, which is handy if you’re a noob.
The smart part is the adaptation. Finish a week, log your reps and weights, and the following week adjusts based on what you actually did. The question is, does it work or will it lead to injury?
Built for Real Gyms

Apple says Gym Strength covers more than 350 exercises across over 30 types of equipment, including dumbbells, kettlebells, suspension trainers, cable machines, and barbells. The minimum you need is a pair of dumbbells, so a garage or home setup works just as well as a commercial gym.
It also plans for the reality that someone is always camped on the machine you want. You can swap equipment or choose an alternative with a similar movement and body focus, add sets, or skip an exercise entirely.
What You Need
You’ll need an iPhone on iOS 27.3 or an iPad on iPadOS 27.3. An Apple Watch on watchOS 27.3 is optional, but it’s worth it if you want to see your exercises and log reps and weight from your wrist while it tracks heart rate and calories burned.
There’s also an optional feature called Training Note, the only part of Gym Strength powered by Apple Intelligence. It shows up at the start of each workout to preview your session, explain your progression, and call out milestones. It needs a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with the device language set to English.
Gym Strength is included with a Fitness+ subscription, which runs $9.99/month or $79.99/year in the U.S. and can be shared with up to five family members. New subscribers get a month free.
I Love Bulking Season
I’ve said it a hundred times: runners, riders, and triathletes who lift are harder to break and faster to bounce back. The problem is rarely motivation though. It’s that most of us have no idea what a sensible four-week block looks like, so we default to more miles instead.
A planner that handles the programming, adapts as we go, and takes the guesswork out of the weight room lowers the barrier a lot.
Lots of Questions
Two things. First, this is a beta, so expect rough edges before it settles. Second, the plans are built around general strength protocols, and we haven’t seen anything yet that lines up a lifting block with a marathon build or an Ironman taper.
If you’re deep in a training cycle, you’ll still want to think about where the heavy days land. An app can adjust your weights. It can’t feel your legs on a Sunday long run or if your lower back hurts. So be cautious!
Still, for anyone who’s been meaning to start lifting and if you’re an Apple fan or already use Fitness+ – this is a pretty friendly on-ramp. Get stronger, bulk responsibly, and let’s do this offseason thing right.
