We Have Questions: Kimba, Sleep Scent Therapy Edition

Kimba hopes to make your sleep better. We asked Founder Ben Fuxbruner the questions you had; from scents, to sleep, and what’s actually in the device.

Earlier, we covered Kimba’s launch and $6.5 million funding round led by Selva Ventures. Kimba is a new sleep tech platform built around adaptive scent therapy. After the announcement, we had a lot of questions about how the device actually functions day to day, so we sat down with Founder and CEO Ben Fuxbruner to get into the details.

Scott: Let’s start with the basics. There are clearly three chambers for different scents; is each chamber in the device a different scent?

Yes. Each chamber holds a different scent, and the system releases a targeted selection of one or more of those scents throughout the night at what we’ve determined are the optimal moments based on the user’s sleep data.

Scott: What scents are available at launch?

At launch, Kimba will have a full collection of 12 scents. We’re starting with an initial sampling of 7:

Soft Blue — Delicate and floral, built on Roman chamomile. Developed to quiet the day’s emotional residue and guide the body toward its natural onset of sleep. Gentle enough for even the most sensitive sleepers. Targets sleep initiation.

Golden Grove — The olfactory signal that tells the brain the day is done. Built on Australian sandalwood as a biological anchor, a grounding, repeatable cue for the shift from daylight into rest, with early evidence for supporting deeper sleep. Targets grounding.

Serene Flower — A garden just after sunset, the air cooling. Built on high-altitude French lavender, the most-studied calming note in sleep research, formulated to settle the nervous system and slow the heart rate as the body first sinks toward sleep. Targets parasympathetic activation.

Bright Citrus — The scent that tells you the night is still here. Built on fresh Italian bergamot, a small, clean brightness that loosens tension and steadies mood. Targets mood regulation.

Lemon Calm — A blend based on Bulgarian melissa, formulated to downshift anxiety and quiet the cognitive arousal of a racing mind—the wired, tired state that keeps sleep out of reach or breaks it in the small hours. Targets anxiety downshifting.

Orange Blossom — A tender composition based on Moroccan orange blossom, developed to wrap tension in warmth and ease the nervous system toward peace—a slow physiological letting-go rather than sedation, with inhalation linked to parasympathetic predominance. Targets autonomic calm.

Herbal Clear — A crisp, green composition based on French rosemary, built for the morning side of sleep. Clears mental fog and lifts focus as the body comes back online and the day takes shape. Targets cognitive clarity.

Scott: How long do the chambers last? How long do the scents themselves last?

Scent capsules last and are replaced every three months. New capsules are automatically shipped to the user’s home approximately two weeks before their replacement date, so there’s no gap in coverage.

Scott: Does someone need to put water in the chambers to refill it each day?

No. Kimba doesn’t require water at all. The scent capsules come ready to use—you simply insert them into the device and you’re set.

Scott: So walk us through the start: three scents come with the device, and the user picks which three to begin with? Then every three months they get an alert—something like “Time to pick your Kimba scent”—and choose again?

Every user begins with a sleep assessment in the Kimba app. That helps us understand their sleep challenges, goals, preferences, and lifestyle factors. From there, we build a personalized sleep profile, and that profile determines the first three scent capsules they receive with their device—so it’s not a cold pick from a menu, it’s based on what we learn about them upfront.

After the first three months, when it’s time to replace those initial capsules, Kimba provides a personalized set of recommendations for the next quarter based on the user’s sleep data and ongoing usage. Users can review those recommendations in the app, see the reasoning behind them, and either accept the suggested selection or swap individual scents before their next shipment.

Customization is always available, but we do encourage following Kimba’s recommendations, because the system becomes increasingly personalized over time—it’s using insights gathered during sleep to continuously refine each user’s experience.

Pre-orders for Kimba are open now at kimba.ai, starting at $299 for the device, software, and a 6-month supply of personalized scents. Devices will ship later this year.
