Interesting. Tonal jumps into WeWork Offices

Strength training between meetings sounds great, but there is some fine print.

WeWork isn’t a name that’s crosses into our universe very often because you know, the lack of a fitness angle, but today is a new day. WeWork and Tonal have announced a partnership that puts the Tonal 2 and its Ultimate Accessories Bundle inside nine WeWork locations across the US.

They’re pushing wellness in the workplace and want its members to lift before work, between calls, or on the way out the door, without a commute to a gym.

We like the idea. Time is the thing that kills most people’s training, and we’d rather see an office offer a strength option than another snack or on tap cold brew coffee station.

Tonal’s wall-mounted system makes sense because it doesn’t take up a ton of real estate. It also adjusts resistance in real time and tracks progress, so you’re not guessing at weights during a 25-minute window between meetings.

The Locations

The nine locations are spread across five states.

In Northern California

535 Mission Street in San Francisco

400 Concar in San Mateo

2120 University in Berkeley

In Southern California:

12130 Millennium Drive in Playa Vista

5161 Lankershim Blvd in North Hollywood.

Washington gets Hawk Tower and Holyoke, both in Seattle.

Oregon gets 830 NE Holladay in Portland.

And in Texas, it’s 600 Congress in Austin.

The Catch

Now the fine print. Access is for WeWork Private Office members at these locations, who reserve time with the on-site Community team.

If you’re a drop-in or coworking-pass person, the announcement doesn’t say you’re covered. It’s a perk for tenants, not a public gym.

Then there’s the question we kept coming back to, if WeWork wants you to sweat, where do you clean up?

The announcement doesn’t mention showers or locker rooms at any of the nine locations and for us, we had to know so we reached out to Tonal, because getting nasty and then expecting to work after is a no go for me, dawg.

They responded four locations have both showers and locker rooms: North Hollywood, San Francisco, Seattle’s Holyoke building, and Portland. Showers are also available at those four, plus Seattle’s Hawk Tower, Silicon Valley, and Austin.

That means Hawk Tower, Silicon Valley and Austin have showers but no locker rooms, so plan on bringing your gear in a bag and changing somewhere else. Berkeley and Playa Vista weren’t on the list of locations with showers that Tonal sent us, so if you’re a member there, ask your Community team before you plan your lunch-hour lift around it.

The Incentives

The deal sweetener is decent too. WeWork members get $1,000 off a Tonal purchase, and WeWork employees get $1,250 off for a limited time. Tonal members get 25% off WeWork On Demand. Terms apply, so read them. Tonal says it has helped more than 300,000 members lift over 274 billion pounds since 2015.

It’s a cute stat and we’re covering this news because we believe its a good thing for WeWork people.

Workplace wellness is moving past the standing desk and the yoga mat in the corner. At the moment, it’s a small rollout, but sometimes that is all you need to get started.
