The Marathon Super Shoe Just Got An Upgrade with the Nike Alphafly 4

Nike says 10% more energy return, 5% less weight — and for once, the hype might be earned

It’s no secret the Nike Alphafly’s are popular. But just how popular?

Nike VP of running footwear Bret Schoolmeester said the Alphafly line has become the most popular marathon racing shoe among runners at all paces — not just the elites up front, but the four, five, and six-hour finishers who make up most of the field.

And for that reason, Nike just dropped the Alphafly 4, in limited release with a wider rollout October 29 at Nike.com and select retailers.

What’s New

Nike claims, lighter and more stable; and we’re always a little skeptical when a brand rolls out “10% more energy return” and “5% lighter” numbers without context, but here’s what’s behind them:

  • Reworked Air Zoom Pods. The two pressurized air pods under the forefoot are now shaped using radio frequency and vibration instead of heat, making them 30% lighter and easier to fully compress.
  • Wider Flyplate. The carbon-fiber plate keeps its scooped shape but gets a wider base at the forefoot, directly responding to wear-tester complaints about lateral stability late in races.
  • New Foam Mix. ZoomX is joined by ZoomX LT for a softer, bouncier ride, dropping the shoe to 188 grams in a men’s size 8.5.
  • Rebuilt Atomknit Upper. A seamless, breathable mesh with zoned midfoot cables and a molded heel. The goal being a locked-in fit that doesn’t need to be cranked down to work.

Built for Speed and You

Athlete feedback collected across multiple generations of Alphafly helped guide the shoe’s development. Learnings from Nike’s Project Dreamweaver, extensive women’s trials, and insights from distance runners of all abilities and intensities informed improvements to stability, smoothness, comfort and confidence over distance.

Schoolmeester said the most common request from testers wasn’t “make it faster” — it was “make it more stable late in the race.” Not only did Nike build this for elite racers but also anyone looking to have stability throughout.

Price

At $280, the Alphafly 4 is actually $15 cheaper than the Alphafly 3’s were which is surprising and an ultra rare move in a category where “new model” usually means “new higher price.”

It puts the shoe in line with competitors like ASICS’ Metaspeed line ($270 – $300) and the upcoming Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 5 (expected at $250).

It’ll make its race debut at the Copenhagen Half Marathon before hitting Berlin, Chicago, and New York this fall. Expect to see it everywhere on your feed over the next six weeks.

Our Thoughts

Marathon shoe launches are easy to be cynical about because it feels like we’ve gotten to a point where every “revolutionary” update is usually a few grams and less stability. This one’s a little different because the changes are aimed at the back half of the race, not just the front of the pack.

Whether the wider forefoot and softer ride translate to real gains late in a race is debatable. Maybe you just trained harder? We certainly know these will be popular, sell like crazy and we’ll be watching
