Nike launches NikeLab Running Collection

The first Nike apparel collection that focuses on the before, during, and after.

We’ve all lived through this when you open your drawers. You have gear built for the workout, and then gear completely built for everything else.

Nike’s answer to this is NikeLab Running, a new division and collection built from actual athlete insight rather than a seasonal moodboard, and it launches globally October 1 on nike.com and select retail partners.

What is NikeLab Running?

This isn’t a shoe drop or a hype colorway; it’s a full apparel collection of tops, bottoms, and outerwear across women’s and men’s lines, designed around the idea that the run doesn’t start when you lace up the shoes or start the watch; and it doesn’t end when you stop it either.

The women’s lineup leads with wool-blend tops built to balance breathability and insulation, paired with shorts, leggings, vests, and outerwear that are meant to work as a system, not standalone pieces.

The men’s side leans into lightweight woven jackets and pants that mix stretch and structure with a fit that doesn’t scream “athletic wear” the second you walk into a coffee shop.

Nike’s Sport Research Lab mapped where runners run hottest and where they need heat retention most, then built ventilation and insulation zones accordingly, making sure those zones line up across layers instead of fighting each other. From there, they added in reflective details, minimal-seam construction, and smart storage.

Athlete-Built

Sarah Gardner, Nike’s Director of Global Women’s Running Apparel, said the hard part wasn’t designing for fitness, it was designing for everything around it. They want anyone purchasing this collection to be able to wear it for their commute, or if weather shifts mid-run. They want it to be about picking a layer you’ll be happy with when you can’t decide if you need it or not.

Yea, its a bunch of marketing speak but we like the idea of Nike listening to everyday athletes, not just their pros or nobody at all.

That’s the whole premise of RunLab-style development, and it’s one we can get behind. It’s no secret Nike needs to rethink how they stand out in the market and building the product with the athlete in the room is a smart and thoughtful approach.

NikeLab Running is being shaped in real time by Nike’s Swoosh TC athletes, a collective of elite distance runners, alongside insight from runners at every level and intensity. Not just elites setting trends from the top down. Us, too.

The Nike We Remember

Nike built its reputation by listening to athletes and building around what they actually needed, not just what looked good in an Eastbay catalog. Somewhere in the last several years, a lot of running apparel — Nike included, lost its way and started to feel like it was designed by committee, chasing trends instead of solving problems. All while Nike started to feel too “elite” as well.

NikeLab Running is a deliberate step back toward the original formula. It’s explicitly framed as a platform to test and learn from, not a nostalgia play, which means what launches October 1 is really just the starting point, and how the collection evolves depends on what the running community actually tells Nike works. And that they listen.

We’ll be watching to see if the execution holds up but the concept itself is the right one, and it’s overdue.

The debut NikeLab Running collection launches globally October 1 at nike.com and select retail partners.
