Earlier this month we were on the ground for Salomon’s Flatiron store opening in NYC. It was complete with pace groups, custom tees, a DJ, the whole damn playbook.
Now New Balance is putting a stake in the ground on the other coast, opening its first US West Coast flagship at The Grove in Los Angeles.
Is this the new East Coast/West Coast turf war, except with tempo runs instead of diss tracks?
We can’t say for certain. We also can’t confirm New Balance (HQ in Boston) knows how to throw a party the way New York just showed us. But if you’re out in LA, this one’s worth a stop.
The Grove Flagship

New Balance’s new spot is a 4,400-square-foot, two-level store, and per the brand it’s the first West Coast flagship in a lineup that already includes London, Tokyo, and New York City. The design was handled in-house by New Balance’s own retail team, and it’s built to lean into the LA market specifically rather than just copy-pasting a flagship formula that works.
Standout details inside:
- A two-story curved staircase anchored by a feature wall dedicated to New Balance athletes
- A custom seating and community gathering area right at the entrance
- Floor-to-ceiling windows for that open, see-and-be-seen retail feel
- A dedicated room for the brand’s Made in USA collection
- Extended lifestyle and running walls covering the brand’s full range

Tracy Knauer, New Balance’s SVP of North America, framed the opening as more than a store but a way to plant the brand’s flag in LA through storytelling, athlete ties, and experiences that keep the customer at the center of it all. All standard flagship-opening language, sure, but the square footage and the staircase back it up. It looks really nice.
Two Brands with Different Styles

Two coasts, two brands, two flagship openings in the same month. Salomon is playing up the community card in Flatiron — group runs, demo shoes, a store team that outnumbered the questions. New Balance is playing the design card at The Grove — architecture, craftsmanship, a Made in USA showcase.
Different plays with a similar message. The biggest run brands aren’t content putting product on shelves at Foot Locker anymore. They want physical real estate in the neighborhoods where their runners already live, train, and hang out. Cities are turning into showrooms, and the storefront is becoming as much a part of the brand story as the shoe.
If you’re in LA, get over to The Grove and see it for yourself.
And if Salomon and New Balance want to settle this East Coast/West Coast thing by meeting in Austin, we’ll be ready.
