OK. So we’ve been waiting on this one for a while.

Back at The Running Event 2025 in December, we met the team behind JANUARY, a then-unannounced shoe brand out of the Bay Area. There they were, on the outer walls of the showroom floor in their tiny booth, with a big promise.

The more we spoke with them, the more we walked away impressed. At the time, they asked us not to post photos, so we didn’t. But we did highlight the brand in our ‘Best of TRE‘ post, saying:

We told our readers to go sign up for updates, because if there’s one thing the Atreyu shutdown taught the run community last year, it’s that upstarts don’t survive without people showing up for them early.

So we did. Every few months since TRE, we’ve checked in with JANUARY for an update. Not because anyone asked us to keep tabs on them, but because we just liked them, the shoes and will always support an upstart trying to do something different in this industry, especially when they’re building it from scratch against some very entrenched competition.

The wait is now over and JANUARY has officially launched with its debut performance shoe: the Scignal.

Who’s Behind JANUARY

JANUARY is led by Wei-En Chang, who serves as CEO and lead footwear designer, bringing more than three decades of product development experience into a brand built by a founding team of male and female BIPOC runners. We normally wouldn’t point that out but its important to their story and the brand’s identity. A reflection of who’s actually shaping the product.

As the sport’s audience continues to widen across age, gender, and background, JANUARY’s stated goal is straightforward: high-performance running, reimagined for everyone, without asking anyone to compromise on feel or fit to get there.

The brand name itself is personal. Chang and his father were both born in January, a month he describes as one of renewal, of new beginnings, “when life is at its fullest potential.” That idea of a fresh start runs through the whole project, down to the shoe you see today.

“Unlocking every runner’s maximum potential is my goal, by designing and delivering products with high performance and style,” Chang says.

What Makes the Scignal Different

The Scignal is built around a pretty direct challenge to a running-shoe assumption most of us have stopped questioning: that better cushioning means a taller, bulkier stack.

JANUARY says the Scignal is the first shoe in the industry with a single-piece dual-density midsole, plush under the heel and firmer through the forefoot, aiming for responsive cushioning and a smooth transition without piling on volume to get there.

That midsole is built on JANUARY’s proprietary KineXion™ technology, a supercritical, aerospace-grade TPEE foam.

The pitch is that where conventional foams need max thickness to feel soft, KineXion compresses softer, rebounds faster, and holds up longer, all at a lower stack height that keeps a runner closer to the ground.

“Scignal proves you do not need height to have great cushioning, and you do not need compromise to deliver performance,” Chang adds. “It represents the next generation of running footwear thinking: lighter, smarter, more human.”

Worth noting: there’s no carbon plate in this shoe, and that’s intentional. Plated shoes can offer real benefits at elite paces, but they also raise injury risk for a lot of everyday runners who aren’t racing at that intensity.

Instead, JANUARY built in a nylon shank for torsional stability through corners, giving the shoe structural support that works with the foam’s softness rather than around it.

The Scignal launches in three colorways drawn from the natural tones and shifting light of the Bay Area, aiming for something that reads equally well on a long run or in line at the coffee shop.

We received the Morning Mist, but love the Desert Bloom colorway most.

Our Time in the Scignal So Far

To be clear, this isn’t a full review, we’ve only got 30 or so miles in these. But that felt like enough to share some early impressions, especially with a bit of context.

Our first impression was how light these are. Sadly, at first we were mostly just wearing these around the house, working through a broken ankle. Not exactly the stress test JANUARY had in mind for a debut trainer, but it turned out to be a pretty honest way to see hoe stable these are and get a feel for the ride at zero pace and zero pressure.

Since then, as we’ve healed up and started rebuilding mileage, the outside of our foot has still been a little cranky, and that’s exactly where the Scignal has excelled. Unlike our On’s or even the brand new Salomon Aero Blaze 4, we wanted a soft landing above almost everything else right now, and that’s exactly what this shoe delivers. The dual-density setup does what JANUARY says it does; it is forgiving under the heel, without the ride ever feeling mushy or directionless. Too many trainers right now sink into the foam as if you’re running with two pillows under your feet. These are not that. They’re cushy is our way of explaining them.

Since. We’ve put in 10 mile runs but nothing longer and they’ve kept our feet and legs fresh. None of which were hard efforts but keeping things easy at 10 – 12 minute paces as we still build back fitness. They do attract dirt though so if you’re looking to keep thins fresh and white, think about which colorway you purchase.

We’ll also say, and maybe its the 90+ Austin heat and humidity, but we have run into hot feet as our only real issue. Maybe its the socks we choose for these runs, but it is worth noting.

We’ll continue to build and put miles into these shoes and have more to say soon. For now: this is a genuinely comfortable, well-considered debut from a brand we’ve been rooting for since a hotel conference room at TRE.

It’s a premium price for an unknown shoe and brand but if you can and do support upstarts and those battling the big brands, the Scignal is worth your attention.

It hits select specialty running retailers starting August 2026, with US launch partners including Running Wylder (San Francisco, CA), Wild Runners (Auburn and Fair Oaks, CA), and Milestone Running (San Diego and Pacific Beach, CA). Additional retail partners are expected to be announced.
