Altra Launches Oldest Run Team

The running brand says to hell with the young whipper-snappers and launches a team that is 321 years old. Kind of.

Most running campaigns are all the same. Insert a fast and hot bodied 26-year-old on a billboard. Show off some amazing shoes and rinse and repeat.

Altra just did the opposite.

The brand has unveiled The Legacy Team, which it calls Britain’s oldest running team. Four runners aged 75 to 85 with a combined age of 321. Their job is to pass a lifetime of running sense to runners in their twenties and thirties.

Meet the Team

  • Peter Giles, 82. The country’s fastest octogenarian over 5K.
  • Rajinder Singh MBE, 79. A runner since childhood in India, a marathoner on multiple continents, and recognized as the oldest runner in the Sikh community.
  • Laurence Cummings, 85. Holds 204 age-category parkrun records across England and Scotland.
  • Pritpal Kaur, 75. The oldest British Asian woman to finish this year’s London Marathon, which she did while living with blood cancer. She was one of only 35 women over 75 to cross the line.

Britain’s best-known portrait photographer, Rankin, shot the team and his subjects are also pretty legendary, including David Bowie, Madonna, and Queen Elizabeth II.

And to Altra, The Legacy Team is no different and got the exact same treatment as any A-lister.

Why The Legacy Team?

Altra commissioned research behind the campaign, and the numbers highlight that in the UK, most don’t reach legacy statues:

  • The average British runner quits at just 39.
  • Of those who’ve stopped, one in three left because of injury.
  • More than half of runners have had a setback that kept them out for three months or longer.
  • One in six say they never fully recovered.

Plenty of runners aren’t aging out of the sport but instead are getting hurt out of it, usually by doing too much, too soon, with no long-term plan.

That’s what the team and Altra are here to address.

Giles says young runners overtrain and overcomplicate everything, and his advice is to listen to your body. He talks to his during runs and lets that guide each session. Kaur’s version is simpler: “Be kind to your body and your body will be kind to you.”

Our Thoughts

Anytime a brand does something different, it’s refreshing. But when they also have a “why” behind it, that makes it even sweeter.

Yes, it’s a brand campaign, and the research is Altra’s own but we don’t care, it doesnt need to be picked apart. This can be fun.

Endurance culture obsesses over PRs, podiums, and who’s fast right now and it rarely asks who’s still out there at 80. And why.

Altra’s marketing director said their team kept getting inspired at races by the runners in their seventies and eighties, and that’s the right instinct. The people who’ve run for 50 years know something about durability that no training plan can teach.

Runners aren’t supposed to peak at 28 and fade. We’d rather be Peter Giles at 82, still chasing 5K times and talking to our bodies.

The campaign rolls out across PR, social, retail, and events over the coming months. Later this year, Altra will release The Long Run, a free book of the team’s running wisdom for younger runners.
